Wi-Fi network card in a Lenovo ThinkPad can connect to the a cell phone hotspot, but not to a Comcast residential access point. I believe the network card in the laptop is designed for a newer technology and the Comcast access point does not support the standard. What else could cause this problem?

best post the exact laptop model, and the wifi card model - find it in device manager, or post a screenshot showing it
So it sees the network and never connects? Maybe you can try upgrading the firmware and drivers for your network card? I have seen scenarios where that was what was required in order to sort out issues along those lines.
Please tell us what kind of Wireless Network card.  Commonly they are Intel Cards (8260 for example).
Please confirm you are or are not using a built-in cellular card (if it even has one).

Then, do a TCP/IP Reset, DNS Flush and try connecting again.

Open cmd.exe with Run as Administrator
Then: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Then: ipconfig /flushdns

Restart and test.

All, I no longer have the laptop details on me, but based on your input, I believe I found the solution. I already updated the wireless card drivers.
When you mean update the firmware, are you referring to the BIOS, or firmware for the network card?

Thank you for your time?

Firmware for network card.
