Export VM while VM is running

Hi Guys,

We have a mission critical server on a Hyper-V (VM) for which I would like to run an export to have a copy of the original machine.

I will be doing the export, while the server is running and high in demand.

The server / services can't be affected in any way.
Has anyone experienced any issues with exporting a VM from a running server, or is this absolutely safe to do?

It's safe to do but can slow down the VM a bit.  It's like doing a backup of it during production hours.

If you don't want that to happen, do the export during non-peak hours.

i'ts completely safe, you'll get an exact copy of the VM at the time of the export.

You must be using Hyper-V 2012 or later (MAYBE 2012 R2, but I think 2012 does it too).

And you need to accept that any time you're going to be exporting huge amounts of data, your disk performance is going to suffer... The ONLY way I can think of around this is to setup replication using Hyper-V replica but that could end up taking days or even weeks to fully replicate.  And you might have to manually limit the bandwidth used.
