WSUS transient error when downloading update
WSUS fails to download updates. Im sick of this application. I have it on Server 2012. I have rebuilt this 10x and tried both WID and SQL DBs. I have run every tool to repair i can find. Im at a point i can keep the program up and access the screen to see updates. However, when i push an update to approve, it never downloads. When looking in BITS, i see the transfer in state, transient error. Suspended. I dont know how to get around this and am looking for any help.
Is your Server 2012 OS fully patched, including patches required for WSUS? What operating system are the updates you're trying to download for?

Its any update i try fails for any OS. And this might be part of my problem? When i try to check for updates on the server, green bar is just spinning?

Hi tbs_mnp,
we sometimes get problems when behind a proxy. The proxy seems to get in the way of a timely response.
You may like to give WSUS offline a try.
With that tool you can build a local copy of all the patches on any machine.
Once the updates are collected, you can move the "client folder" to the target machine an run an "offline" update.
Works most time for me. Even when build in update has some kind of trouble.

Do you have a perimeter firewall in addition to the Windows firewall? If so, you'd better check there as well. Here is an article and list of the Microsoft URLs you'd have to make sure are allowed through your firewall:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/system-center/configuration-manager-2007/bb693717(v=technet.10)
If you can't update your WSUS server OS, and if that server hasn't been updated for a while, you might want to go to the Windows Update catalog site and search manually for updates that might be needed for WSUS:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

i fixed the firewall. server ifs fully patched. yet still getting same errors in WSUS for update
Is this server 2012 or 2012R2? Do you have it set to synch on a schedule and are the synch jobs finishing successfully so you have a list of updates to approve?Have you approved updates? Did you remove the previous WSUS database folder and create a new one when you reinstalled? This seems like a silly question, you said that BITS is running, but are the Windows Internal Database and WSUS services running?

you know what. i got it working! firewall was the issue. needed to change WSUS service back to network service. reboot then worked.
Firewall issues can be tricky! Glad you got it worked out.
