Well it depends from the format the files are using...as you can see from this Solution from EE there can be many different ones.
What is the extension of the file you have?
Do you have a layout of the fields in the file, or better yet the Cobol program that read or created it? Part of the challenge the file will be that it doesn't contain a layout of the fields and attributes of the data. That was provided in the Cobol FD when the file was created and accessed.

Hi,
I do not have the layout of the data files, so i would like to know if there was a viewer.
I need to access data from 4 tables in an old system, to export data to a new system.
I have 2 versions of files, one without extension (runtime is rm cobol). And another with data file without extension and index file .idx (runtime is mf cobol).

Can you upload the files or do they contain sensitive information?
Originally you said these we RM Cobol files, but now you mentioned MF Cobol, which is correct?
Without the field definitions I think you are in for a tough time. There are some viewers out there but they can be quite expensive. It would depend on the importance of the data if it was worth it to you.
Have you reached out to the vendor of the application that produced the files, they might be able to help you out, even if for a modest fee?

If you have .idx files -- maybe-- the other file is dbase format..either .dbf or .dat (check if you have the extension hidden)
If they are .dbf or .dat there are plenty of viewers/extractors ...simpler of all is to use Access and link it to the cobol data file.
Also for .dbf files i have used dbf viewer which is fast and accurate.
If everything fails then i suppose you need to upload something to take a look...personally i have a binary based (driver free) dbf viewer that can handle all the dbase related files...
HINT: if dbf viewer doesn't see the files and they have the extension .dat ..rename them to .dbf to make them visible

Is sensitive data. Meanwhile, i found a viewer (http://www.cobolproducts.com/datafile/pricing.html) but is too expensive.
And for sure the files are cobol.
