Alternative for Window Server Active Directory

Hi experts,

I am wondering if there is any other software can replace Microsoft Server 2012, 2008, 2016, etc.... if I just wish to active directory service? I just need to have all users setup with the correct permission, policy etc....?

All the clients are running on Windows 10. I am wondering since I am just using one of the service what will be a better alternative? Choice can be a 3rd party software, any linux softwares, etc....

Here are several alternatives.  I used Samba in the past but honestly, Windows Active directory to me is the best.

Hi Experts,

You guys just read my mind. I am debating on the cost vs usage. Since I am only using the AD if I purchase the license for around 1K, I cannot justify MS Server cost 1K unless I am using other services as well such as DNS, DHCP, IIS, files... etc.... This is the reason why I was asking if there are other alternatives if I just want to use the AD.

I like the suggestion from McKnife that I can use other device to setup user management. Since the company is using Synology (similar to QNAP)  , it has DHCP, DNS, and AD (similar to MS's AD except that it does not have the other advanced feature like GPO etc....).

If I want to setup the DHCP or DNS, I can set that up in the router/firewall as well.

I like the Lee's idea of save the trouble by spending the $$ on the MS server for any possible issues that may come up. (Unless the company can entirely shift away from MS products such as the MS Office(can be subbed with OpenOffice or google sheet), MS SQL (there is an alternative to run it on linux), Window 10 (this is something that user cannot move away from unless retrain user to use linux) but the worst part is that the ERP software is OS dependent which it requires Microsoft OS.

Coolie has a link for alternative if I decided to move away from MS and what are the possible solutions out there.
