Which is better roaming profile or local?

Hi All

We are currently on local profiles and have a terminal server for users to login to

Which is better roaming or local?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

In which situation should each be used?

Do you still need antivirus if you go for roaming profiles?

I would like to know the experts preferences and why they prefer one over the other?

Folder redirection, work folders depending on your is version.
Reduces the amount of data needed to be transferred in/out on login/logout.

Roaming provides simplicity if you grow to multiple terminal servers in a farm, no matter to which the user logs in, their settings will be the same.

You can set a GPO to delete cached data on successful transfer out. This reduces profile data buildup on the terminal server.

Anti-virus is deployed where the user can access and click on an item that might infect ...

Your description can be interpreted ...
Terminal services has its own profike setting.
Users can not mix profike from workstation and a server (terminal server) environment.
Folder redirection makes data in refirected folders no matter the system

Complications from roaming profiles deal with on logout the profile is not released, on login the profike is seen in use and the user is started with a temp profike.

Advantages, a new workstation is assigned, the user logs in, and all their settings, info is there.
Centralized backup of the server with a limited need to backup workstations.
In today's threat environment, antivirus and antimalware are a must, same with firewalls even internal ones.
You always need antivirus.

Roaming profiles are not ideal in today's environment with large amounts of data profiles.  It's better to use folder redirection.
Do you still need antivirus if you go for roaming profiles?
Yes! You always need protection. Roaming profiles would actually justify it more because you're bringing data (settings, etc) that's been used on another system, so there is actually a better chance of something risky being there.

Disadvantages: Profiles need to be redone every so often (because of upgrades of the OS that is going to be accessing it). So ideally you want to have an environment where workstations all have the same OS (even better if they have the same software). Corruption of roaming profiles can be a nuisance also, especially when those profiles contain a lot of data.

Advantages : Settings transfer with you from machine to machine. Copy of profiles exist on server.

For the most part, I would not go with roaming profiles due to reasons mentioned here (folder redirection being a better option IMHO).
