RMM solutions - Solarwinds VS Datto VS Ninja

Hi -

I am currently reviewing RMM systems, namely Datto, Ninja and Solarwinds.
I am an IT consultant aimed purely at small business support. Does anyone have any general feedback on their experience with either of these RMM solutions?

I do not have any first hand experience with any of the RMM's that you named above.
But I do have a lot of experience in doing the research for bringing new software to my clients.
That said, my first tip is to find out what kind of commitment you will have to make for each one of these and the cost per license.
Some companies make you buy a set amount of licenses upfront, say 100 which you have to pay for on a monthly basis, whether you are using them or not. You do not want to get stuck with 100 license committment that is costing you $2 per license per month, total cost to you of $200 per month.
Find out the limitations of each. How complicated are they to use. If this is the first time that you are going to be doing RMM, then you want a nice user friendly console. We were using ConnectWise, formly LabTech, this was an enterprise grade RMM. So many choices about how to configure them that you wouldn't use 1/4 of them for your clients.
Do they offer FREE training? ConnectWise didn't.
How is their support? Email only? Most likely.
I would definitely do some research and find out what other people who are actually using these titles are saying about them.
Keep it Simple Stupid KISS! If you will be working solely on small businesses, you really don't need a ton of bells and whistles.
You need a good remote connect package, You need a simple report generator that you don't need to know Crystal Reports for.
How do they handle Windows updates and 3rd party patching?

I just underwent the same situation with the organization I work for. Datto or Kaseya is the way to go.
We went with Datto and have their PSA as well, very well integrated with out of the box ready solutions, including billing and a project management feature.
Datto support is really unmatched as well, we have been very happy with their product, support, and all around functionality.

Hi Mike,  we are having our 2nd Datto demo today in fact and i am quite impressed so far. The downside at the moment is cost, as you also need to pay a £900 onboarding fee as well. That's quite painful when running your own business, however, if after that a lot of the services are out of the box than that's good. The Datto system you rolled out is for an Internal IT dept of which you are the operations manager? How has it changed the work flow pattern compared to before you had it? Interested to know the impact it had/

Yes we use it for our org here. I walked into already having LanDesk (not recommended at all, ever), which was more costly, much less easy to use.
How it has changed our environment here -
I'll start with Script roll-outs, we used LanDesk and GPO's before, now only using Datto, only thing in GPO is Datto deployment (support assisted in getting that setup). All of our application deployments are now through Datto, can use all the major scripting languages (we solely use PowerShell now due to consistency).
Datto logs everything that happens on computers, no who did what, when, how, it tells you on an easy to read page. Also logs what it did if it was a script job, if there was errors, what the errors were, nice and easy no need to hunt for or have logging inside GPO deployments (which many do not know how to do as well).

Sites (or clients for you) -
Don't need to have everyone all in one bucket, can parse out which computer is what, which Datto will do for you when downloading the proper exe from the site.
Everything here was dropped into 1 OU here for computers, when I started that was changed so all the satellite locations were separated, then used GPO's to deploy the software needed. Still have the Computer and User OU's setup that way, but only to roll-out Datto and have it drop appropriately.
Here is where things get cool - When a computer checks into a site for the first time there is a 'job' setup to deploy whatever is needed for that site. We do many different things, so instead of managing GPO's that some of my folks have trouble following, Datto makes it easy and fast to do what is needed when, making life much easier.

Patching -
Datto will also handle Windows Patching, no need to have a WSUS server for each client or pray that auto update is working. Dont know if a patch got applied, no problem, look and see what happened.
Different Client needs patching done at different times, setup each site differently to their needs.

Logging -
Being an IT Consultant this could really be a $$ generator or a nice selling point.
Depending on parameters setup (again can all be custom defined) and having their PSA (AutoTask) if a computer or a server pops up with a problem that matches the parameter(s) - it will auto open a ticket for you so it can be worked on. If I was a business dependent on an MSP who wouldn't like having the MSP contacting me with, we noticed this is a thing, taking a look at it. Knowing before the client contacts you should really be invaluable and again a nice selling point.
We dont use it here, however I really do see the value in it.

Will this/does this take time to setup, yup, will it be done in a day solo, most likely not, in my opinion is it worth it, most definitely. My staff wouldn't touch LanDesk packet deployments or GPO's now they create deployment packages, modify scripts, and pull reports all from Datto and I can what they are doing to computers when, no secrets.

Sorry if I got redundant and/or wordy, Datto is really worth it and I cannot express enough. This might help as well, when starting I had 7 people on the team, 2 have left, we aren't looking to back-fill, no need to, I can actually do it with 1 less, however I like having my team not feel overwhelmed and if someone is out it doesn't hurt as bad. I get asked all the time if we will be hiring (I haven't told them we can do with even less...that will be my little secret).
