what kind of VPN is it?  a commercial VPN with the servers are located overseas?

did you simply try removing the existing VPN connection (which was created using an macOS version older than HS) and recreate it again using the same parameters?

its a VPN that connects to our FW in Boston, we are in NYC

i did try to remove and re-add but it did not work, the VPN works off a certificate which i added in to keychain and added "always trust " permissions

i see. please open Console from Spotlight or Launch Pad and choose:

* your computer name from the left pane
* All Messages on the top status bar
* system.log from the left pane

then connect VPN while keep watching this log. do you see it logs anything for your VPN connection?

this has turned out to be a certificate issue - we download the ASA FW cert and added to the macbooks and it worked
