Can someone help a novice rebuild my server

I am in the process of setting up HP Proliant Ml110 G7 Server. I am a novice at this and would appreciate some help. I just had a rAID 0 setup and lost three of my hard drives. I am using my server for streaming movies. I wil be using Esxi VMware-VMvisor-Installer-6.7.0.update02-13006603.x86_64 and Windows Server 2008R2.   I have 4TB HDD and four bays in my server. I was told to use a RAID 6 but my HP only has RAID 50, 5, 1+0, and 0. I would like to install ESXi on to a USB drive and have the server use this to boot off. Is this possible. If someone has instructions on how to setup from beginning to end that would be appreciated. I am even willing to setup live.

Okay if no RAID 6.

Have you configured your 4 disks for RAID5.

Do you have a USB flash drive at least 4 8 or 16GB for ESXi install
RAID 0 means if you lose one drive you lose everything
RAID 1 will give you 4 TB 4 x Read and can survive 3 drive failure
RAID 5 will give you 12 TB 3 x Read slow writes and can survive 1 drive failure
RAID 10 will give you 8TB  4 x read and 2x write speed gain, at least 1 drive maybe 2 drive failure
So you've got two choices to make

1. RAID 10 (two disk failure, less storage)
2. RAID 5 (one disk failure, more storage)

depending upon workloads RAID 10 will be faster than RAID 5 for some workloads.

Download the HPE OEM edition of ESXi.

The server, is it a Proliant ML110 G7 ?

Yes it is.
VMware does not have this server listed for ESXi.

So it means it's not supported it may install and work.

Did it work before when you installed it?
I had VMware ESXi 5.1
You could try an install of 6.7 but it may not work as your server is old
I have the ISO on the USB but the server seems to not recognize or see the USB.
I burned ESXi 6.7.0 to a Cd. It booted up and has been sitting at initialing IOV for the last 5 minutes.
Can someone please walk me through to get to my BIOS? While installing VMware ESXi 5.5 it gets stuck at "Initializing IOV...", I would likeget to my BIOS and disable VT-d. I hear this will resolve any further issues. Correct?

My server is the HP Proliant ML110 G7
It could also be because your server is not compatible.

also try this...  noIOMMU

see here for details

http://www.digitalroadies.com/vmware-6-initializing-iov-issues/
It seems that Esxi 5.0 runs fine on your server with a bit of BIOS tinkering
How can I get to my BIOS?
Probably F10 can get you to BIOS...if not ...power down the server...power up and watch carefully for messages indicating the F keys...maybe video the whole procedure
How do I get to the command prompt to add the switch?
Press Shift and O to get into the Boot Loader when ESXi boots
I pressed the Shift and O to get into the Boot Loader when ESXi booted and no joy. Nothing happened.
Can this be done from the command line interface (CLI)?
This is what I get when I use Shift+O
You need to add the variable so it disables it and proceeds and then later you can edit the configuration.

Otherwise you'll need to do whatever with your BIOS which is usually F11 at BOOT

Why not just install ESXi 5.1 which is what you had previous did this install?
I tried installing 5.1 and I get the same issue. Frustrating.
And ESXi 5.1 installed before with no issues?

Is this the same server no changes?

Same ESXi ISO as before?
Same server different ISO. I can't find the one from about three years ago. So I down loaded one from VMware.

That will be the issue.

You need to hit tab to edit options
I just received this error.

I figured out my problem. I needed to put a space and then type noIOMMU. Now I need to figure how to activate SSH and connect to the ESXi server.  Then add noIOMMU to the end of the line with kernelopt. Then I will need to figure out how to use vi and edit /bootbank/boot.cfg then save and quit.
If you do not know how to use vi download the Windows Winscp it allows you to edit and save files no need for vi

You just need to enable ssh I've an article for that
Is there anyway to edit and replace the license number of ESX software through vSphere Client? I put "O" instead of "0".  :-(
Did it accept the license?

You should be able to re-edit and apply
What's weird is it did accept it. Do I need to delete everything to include my VM and start all over?
I just updated the license. Good to go.
So the noIOMMU worked, and we are all back and working again with ESXi 5.1 ?
Actually , I was able ti install ESXi 5.5. I still need to go and fix ESXi 5.5 and put noIOMMU in a loop. Right now, I am trying to remeber how to get my other 10TB partioned for my media.
And why my VMTools upgrade is not working. I have my iso in my datastore. But I keep getting this error.
IMG_2437.jpg
because the version of the ISO you've installed does not include it.

it's not really a major issue, download VMware Tools, and install it on the VM.

download them here

https://packages.vmware.com/tools
VMware tools installed. I am trying to to get my VM to see my other three 4TB drives. I have about 10TB left after RAID 5. Do i need to create hard drives (virtual) under VM setting and add a hard drive in so many GB's. Then go to Windows Disk manager and create and set it up my partitions using GPT?
Yes and Yes (safest method) OR attach them as pass through disks
Do i need to create hard drives (virtual) under VM setting and add a hard drive in so many GB's. Then go to Windows Disk manager and create and set it up my partitions using GPT?

Correct.

Make sure YOU DO NOT ALLOCATE ALL THE STORAGE SPACE on the DATASTORE!

Leave 20% FREE.
Ok. So I need to make sure to use the datastore for my location and not the virtual machine. Correct?
correct you add the storage to your data store and then create your vhd's in that datastore
You create Virtual Machine and their Virtual Disks on the Datastore, but make sure you do not fill it!
I am trying to get an idea of how many virtual drives and big my drives need to be in GB to equate to 10TB
a single 10TB disk!

or 5 x 2TB

but do you really need 10TB, my advice start small and expand them as you need them.
Thanks Andrew.
I have VSphere Client 5.5 and a Windows 2012 R2 as a guest VM. The num lock key set to ON when I move the cursor into the VM and  set to OFF when I take the cursor out of the VM.

Do you know how I can disable it?
I have few questions:
1. How can I keep my network discovery on all the time? I am finding myself always having to turn this on after every restart on Windows 2012R2.
2. My remote desktop connection from my pc is unable to connect to my server. Any idea? I am thinking firewall rules?
Here is an example of an error I am getting regarding my Remote Desktop Connection (RDC).

Okay, I think we've now gone beyond....your original question, and are now deviating off topic into new questions.

I think your original question has been answered at installing ESXi and we've helped with your first VM, now questions are being asked about the setup of the VM.

Please post a new question in the Windows 2012 Server topic area, and myself or other experts would be glad to assist.
This question needs an answer!
