Images suboptimal

image sizing and drop shadow is going a little odd here. This has a good drop shadow but the image is fuzzy as it's being scaled up.
http://mantex.technojeeves.com/index.html@p=49549.html

This one has the exact opposite
http://mantex.technojeeves.com/index.html@p=49605.html

I want to get the best of both worlds but don't know what's going on

NB this site is a temporary WP installation made static

Hi,
The problem is that your image is too small, try to use a bigger image and this will be resized correctly.

I don't think you've got it quite. Look at http://mantex.technojeeves.com/index.html@p=49591.html
That one is large. It's clear, which is good, but it's missing the drop shadow: bad
Hi,

If I open or save the image the image is small 160 x 203 px
http://mantex.technojeeves.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Covers-03.png

so if you have a better image / bigger image the result will be nice
then you can apply a drop shadow or any other image filter but first you need a better image quality

Note the image also have a border which I would remove it from the image then after apply  the shadow using css

That's odd. Caching? Here are the cover images in the filesystem. Some are small, some larger. That one's larger:

You can see the covers under the E-Books menu at http://mantex.technojeeves.com/index.html
What I usually do is to edit my image to have a specific size (which will be the regular size or bigger size) then I use a script or set the dimension in the script base of the need.

Old method if you prefer you can use 2 or 3 set of images 1_small.png 1_med.png 1_big.png then display it based on the situation

1- make sure all you image have the same size if possible (at least they should have the same width)
2- make sure it fit well with the dimension if resized by your code.

Sometimes the script or hardcoded dimensions may not fit well with the real image dimension.
If I have to set a dimension inside de code, I do prefer to use % instead of PX and this is better also with responsive...

I'm beginning to think this particular problem might be to do with the fact that a javascript has become 'frozen' in time owing to the fact that the site has been made static and is therefore unable to sync with larger images being introduced. For one thing, something might be being 'fed' by a php script in the real WP site and obviously now cannot be fed
