Configure OSPF at the Interface or Global Config level

Configure OSPF at the Interface  or Global Config level

I have configured OSPF at the Global Config level , then when I checked if OSPF configuration trickled down to  the interface level, but it has not.

R3#sh ip ospf int s0/0
%OSPF: OSPF not enabled on Serial0/0

So I am just wondering in which case you configure OSPF at the Global Config level and  in which case you configure it at the interface level

Thank you

The current and more granular method is the configure at the interface level. It's a preference thing, but at interface is easier control over which interfaces participate in OSPF vs having to enter a network under the OSPF process to matches the interface(s).

See this link for more details:

I believe the only time you configure OSPF at the Interface level is when you need to configure OSPF Network Types, such as  [Broadcast, Non-Broadcast, Point to Multipoint,  Point to Multipoint Non-Broadcast, Point to Point ]
Depends on which operating system and which version. Enabling ospf on a per interface basis is now supported on some Cisco OS's.

there are situations where you configure OSPF at thee Interface level and there are other situations when you need to configure it at the global config.
If you want to Advertise Networks to OSPF, you will have to enable OSPF at the Global Level then Advertise the Networks to OSPF,
Once again, it depends on the OS and version.  Some allow configuring whether a network is part of OSPF at the interface level instead of network statements in the OSPF config.
