Verification of replica failed when adding Windows 2019 Server to SBS2011 Domain

User generated imageUser generated imageHi,

I am trying to add Windows 2019 Server to existing SBS2011 domain, but i ran into an error in Active Directory Services Configuration Wizard screen.  As seen on the screenshot, it populates existing domain name when I supply credentials of SBS2011, but when I click [Next], it says "verification of replica failed. ...". Please see the screenshot.

So far, I have raised domain functional level to Windows Server 2008 R2 from Windows Server 2008 in Active Directory Domains and Trusts in SBS2011, but to no avail.

 What should I do?

Thanks.

Yea, it's complaining about the FOREST level, not the DOMAIN level.
Check both.

User generated imageOK. I raised FOREST level and now it shows "FRS" error.
I found this article:.http://itsimple.info/?p=1059
Should I try the method in that article?
Yep. 2019 simply cannot be a Domain Controller if you're still using FRS for sysvol replication.

take backups of your AD/system state beforehand just in case :-)
Hi,

The procedure highlighted in the article is correct but you need to take few things in mind before migrating from FRS to DFS

There are 3 steps, they are

Prepared - During this state FRS and DFSR are replicating their own individual copies of SYSVOL, but FRS mounts both SYSVOL and NETLOGON shares.

Redirected - During this state FRS and DFSR are replicating their own individual copies of SYSVOL, but DFSR mounts both SYSVOL and NETLOGON shares.

Eliminated - In this final state DFSR is replicating both SYSVOL and NETLOGON and FRS is removed. There is no way back from this step - once executed, FRS is permanently stopped and cannot be configured again.

You need to perform dfsrmig /getmigrationstate after triggering each steps. You can not proceed until it get succeed on each steps.

You can speed up the replication by triggering this command;

dfsrdiag pollad

Once you completed the Globalstate3, check the event logs and confirm it's migrated successfully?. Also, check in services.msc and confirm the FRS service is in disabled state.

Now, proceed with Deployment configuration.

Good luck
systech gave you the right steps.  To make it easier on you, here's an article with step-by-step instructions.  I always use the Express method, but I advise running a dcdiag first to make sure your domain is properly configured before proceeding:

Thanks for the instructions. I am currently backing up SBS2011, as @Steve suggested, before proceeding to make changes.
I will attempt to do this either tonight or tomorrow and report back.

User generated imageAfter running all those commands, I was able to get passed the error on "Deployment Configuration" screen.
File Replication Service was already "disabled" after running Dfsrmig /setglobalstate 1 , 2 and 3.

Thanks you all for your help!
