Convert SATA to IDE in VMWare VM CD-ROM in vCenter WITHOUT SHUTDOWN

Hi there,

Is there a way we could convert a VMware VM CD-ROM in vCenter from SATA to IDE without downtime? If there is, how should we do this as it restricted us to update from the GUI. Thinking if we could do this from the command line  converting the affected virtual machine CD-ROM virtual device node from SATA to IDE on the fly without shutdown BUT no idea how to do this.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks and regards,

Jun

You can't as far as I know. Every time you work with an online virtual server imagine is a physical server that in order for you remove something needs to be shut down first, that's how it works. Removing devices in a hot environment could cause potential issues.

Not without downtime.

and if the GUI is restricted, does this give you the permissions to do it at the command line.

Changes on the fly should never be down, with first a backup, so you can role back the changes you've applied, if you make a mistake a corrupt the Production VM.
