2012 r2 server has powered off twice in last few months-Looking for RCA
Have a WIndows 2012 server which is randomly powering off, twice in past two months
Its in 5.5 vSphere environment which I know is out of support since last September
Whats best way to verify why this is happening?
Which VMWare logs do I need to look at to diagnose this issue?
Nothing really in event viewer and while we use Veeam backup these reboots are taking place outside of this time period?

Also, run Action Center, Maintenance, Reliability history and look for errors at or about the time the server stopped.

Please check
c:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
Check properties of computer, ms licensing.
Are there other VMS?
Use schtasks, c:\windows\tasks
Does VMware log confirms shutdown of VM?
Do you have vcenter appliance?
system log in event viewer should reflect whether it was directed to power off, or when it occurred. Events prior might help indicate why it powered off.
Presumable the host is not being affected, powering off.

Hi Shane, checked windows update log dont see anything for time when reboot happened in the log
ASKER
Getting quite a lot of SQl errors in Application Log for event viewer, also getting esent 510 and esent 533 errors on two occasions that server rebooted, with no application errors from 2.26am to 9.31am on 1st April and no application errors from 2.42 to 12.44pm on 1st June
Everything looks fine with regard to VMware, the only problem is its out of support at 5.5
The host is a power edge m620, it does mention possiblity of faulty hardware in the esent errors, I have seen it where esent errors make the machine freeze, is it possible it contributed to the reboot here, any links proving this would be great

HW issues shoukd cause a VMware error, not limit it to a single VM freezing. Not sure whether faulty memory would manifest when allocated to the VM...
Check the HW to confirm, fix HW issues if any.

I assume the basic hardware is OK as the host is running and only the guest quits.
