Upgrade OS for Exchange Server to 2016

Dear Team,

We have number of VMS which are having old OS 2008 R2 and need to upgrade to 2016 standard.

Scenario 1:
I have 2 Exchange Servers (Version 2013) running on Windows 2008 R2 . The servers which is high available using DAG.
I want to upgrade only the Operating system to windows 2016 standard. So please recommend the best practice to upgrade the OS.
Is it possible if i run the windows 2016 setup  on each server and upgrade ?

My setup is on VMware Satndard (HCI) version 6.7.

You can't upgrade the OS on the VM - create a new VM.  Exchange 2013 is not supported on Server 2016

Thanks Lee.
If i want to upgrade to 2012 R2 how can i achieve this.
I would never upgrade.  Upgrading is a HORRIBLE idea.  No upgrade can ever be as stable as a clean install. Add new servers.  You're virtualized - this should be easy.  You're asking a question of how to do something that no one I know of would ever do, so I don't think you're going to get reliable answers.
