If you aren't in a cluster, I recommend d exporting VMs and installing clean then importing the VMs into the new OS.

Is this for an in-place upgrade?

Make sure to have the firmware and drivers ready prior.

I suggest the following order:
 1: Back up
 2: Firmware Updates
 3: OS in-place upgrade
 4: Drivers
 5: Verify

We've done a few with a few glitches around both firmware and drivers. But, for the most part they've been relatively successful.

Philip,

If I upgrade from 2012r2 to 2019, and I have to backup the VM's, wouldn't it be smarter to just do a clean install of the OS? Pro's and Con's?

Regards!

Unless there's a legacy app that is tied to the OS it is installed on our standard procedure is to install a fresh current version OS and migrate everything.
