Backup and restore ( Windows 7) on Windows 10 has stopped working

I have a Dell desktop PC running on Windows 10. I utilise the backup and restore (Windows 7) program but which has failed to back up recently. This I believe was caused by some update. Looking at the recent updates they are all windows except there is adobe flash player.

Do I need to uninstall any updates? Can I do a fix without that?

On my Windows 10 V1903 machine, Windows 7 Backup is just for recovering old backups.

Windows, Start, Settings, Update and Security, Backup:  Use the File History backup instead.

Test and see if Volume Shadow Copy Services are running on the device. You can run a command prompt from elevation as "VSSADMIN List Writers" to see if any is in an error state or shows last errors for some start. If they are, you may need to troubleshoot those and get them back up stable.

Does this work in the same way as Windows 7 backup with system image being available? System image was great when you had to restore the pc after a hard disk failure.

File History gets your data back. If you have to restore to factory specs, you need to reload applications.

Look at Acronis or Ghost if you wish to make full backups on a (say) USB Hard Drive.

If I use windows 10 backup on external drive, how would I do a restore? I there anything that does a system image like windows 7?

There is a section on File History on restoring from another device.  I will look for a tutorial when I get back to my computer.

Full image backups require a third party tool as noted earlier

I get the impression that Microsoft are not supporting backup and restore (windows 7) any longer and they are not providing a similar product in windows 10.

On your advice I have looked at Acronis and their standard product is just what I need. I will go ahead and start using this.

Following installation updates the backup stopped working. It may have been Adobe updates that caused this but when I uninstalled previous updates it started working again. I cannot keep doing that. If Microsoft were supporting this product they would have brought out a Windows 10 version.

This is a windows 10 version and it is supported. It is not the same executable as on windows 7! Only the name indicates that it is a feature that was already present on windows 7.

Please add details as to why you think Adobe Updates might interfere. How should they? I have no idea what you might be talking about since the functionality cannot be influenced by Adobe.

There were a number of updates. I cannot be sure what caused the backup to stop. As I said by uninstalling updates previously the backup worked. See below on status of the backup.

"In Windows 10, the Backup and Restore control panel was returned to the operating system, known as "Backup and Restore (Windows 7)".As part of this, the interface for scheduling backups (which was lost completely in Windows 8.1) was again made available, as were non-system image file backups. However, the program was deprecated and no longer actively developed by Microsoft since the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update."

Windows 10 provides its own backup service without system image. I have started using Acronis which has system image and excellent support.

I don't follow, but if you are happy with Acronis' product, then I am happy as well :-)
Just wanted to point out that although MS is not developing it further, it is still there and usable and hasn't seen any trouble on my networks.
