It is safe, did you not enable these options at initial creation ?

that's exactly why i am asking.  No i did not enable these options at initial creation.  But i have the option to still.

the vsan datastore is 6tb but only 538 gb free.

Enabling Dedupe and Compression failed with

error

Not enough space FREE. Also the method by which it performs a rolling upgrade of the disk groups with only 2 nodes, may cause you an issue, and if vCenter Server is also on VSAN, this may also cause you can issue.

Hence why I asked you did not select these at initial creation, because if you wanted to use DeDupe and Compression, it would have been much easier (and recommended) to enable before you started to use it and populate it.

So Safe to enable yes, but actually turning on DeDupe and Compression now might be a huge issue.
