Hi

I have been quoted for DELL ME4024  SAS solution and  with PowerEdge R640

I would like to connect the PowerEdge  and the storage directly through 12 Gb SAS connection

Firstly how may SAS connecttion will be between the Storage and PowerEdge ?

Secondly, please let me know how much maximum RAM and  how many CPU cores that PowerEdge R640 support?

Normally one SAS cable per controller in the SAN so two per server for redundancy. Max 4 servers normally with SAS host connect.
If you only ever want one server connected to the storage then a dumb shelf plus a PERC is better,

Max 3TB RAM (and it will cost about $30,000 for 24 x 128GB LRDIMMs.) [Edit, 256GB LRDIMMS are now coming oyt but Dell haven't listed them, just under $5k each so about $100,000 to fully populate it with 6TB or RAM]

Spec sheet says max 28 cores per CPU but that may be out of date by now, [Edit, still max 28 cores per CPU, and those premium CPUs are nearly $10,000 each.]

You did ask for the maximum values rather than sensible  values. There's a sweet spot for RAM $/GB and it's not got by using huge LRDIMMs. Look at filling it with smaller (but still huge) 16GB sticks.

We have been quoted for 2xPowerEdge R640 Servers,
If  2 SAS cables are connected to each of the servers  and as posted above  i understand there will be redundancy.
But connecting these 2 cables will it double up the data transfer rate  as well?

Thanks

We are going to use 256 GB RAM for each PowerEdge R640 servers.

Yes, if you use MPIO round robin it will use both paths,. BTW, there are 4 lanes in the cable so it is 4x12Gb per cable, not just 12 Gb, it is automatically bound together as a 48Gb port.
And of course it depends what you are planning to hang off the other end of the SAS bus?

What is it you are planning to do/striving to achieve?  - high transfer rate/high capacity/high IOPS

I assume it is the Data transfer rate between Dell poweredge and Storage.
It that right the 12g SAS  is used for?

12Gb SAS is used for host connectivity on the SAS model (but bear in mind it is really 48Gb). There is an additional SAS port to daisy-chain additional disk enclosures off.
