never attach or detach a .avdx file
what happens is if you create a checkpoint hyper-v creates a differencing disk and all writes go to the avhx of the checkpoint .. if you detach the avdx then you lose all changes after the checkpoint was created. .. if you try and attach a avdx  this differencing disk will have references to blocks that may not even exist on the original vhdx.

if the vm is turned on what you see in explorer is a combination of your original .vhdx and all changes are written to the .avdx.. so you see both in one view.. what was in the original and everything written after the snapshot was taken.

if you revert then you lose the changes written after the snapshot if you merge you get them combined
