Accessing multiple SharePoint Online sites from within Windows Explorer

Hi - We have a customer that has multiple Microsoft SharePoint Online sites under one tenant. They have asked if it is possible to access these sites (and work on folders/files) from within Windows Explorer. The clients are running Windows 7 and Windows 10 (Windows 7 clients will be replaced/upgraded before January 2020). They don't want the clients to sync the document libraries locally, just access the document libraries from within Windows Explorer and the folders/files to remain in the cloud.

1) Is this possible? Is this only suitable for the migration of data to and from SharePoint Online rather than working with the folders/files on a daily basis in real time?
2) If it is possible, how can this be achieved?
3) If we are able to create mapped drives or a link in Quick Access can we rename to identify Site name or is 'shared Documents' the default? How can be differentiate between different sites?
3) My limited understanding is that it requires Internet Explorer and is not compatible with Edge or Chrome. Is this correct? Clients do not want to set Internet Explorer as the default browser.
4) Will clients have to login each time they access the document libraries from within Windows Explorer?

I look forward to receiving your constructive comments.

Yes. The easiest way to work on these files here is using One Drive.

Install One Drive, sign into the account, then open up a web browser. Go to the sites that they need locally and look for "Sync" on the top bar of navigation. This will utilize One Drive to bring it down locally while still allowing for collaboration within the company, also called Co-Authoring.

This will create a directory on the hard drive, add access to it in file explorer, and show status icons if they have the most recent version or if its in the cloud the most recent and they will download a current copy when opening.

One drive must stay signed in and running on the PC to make sure they are up to date with the rest of the other users that may make changes to the files! Make sure they know this is important.

Hi James - Thanks for your prompt response.

They don't want any of the files synced locally on client machines. Is there another way?
