Hi all,

I have a Server with 5Tb of disk (raid5), 2 x Xeon (8 cores per CPU) Processors and 80Gb of memory installed. Im thinking of installing VMWare on the box so I can install 4 windows hosts. Im looking for best way to acheive this and at the same time keep the licensing costs down. Is there a free or a cost effective path to getting this setup?

Any advice on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

ESXi is FREE. Just need to register for free license.

Part 1:  HOW TO: Install and Configure VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.5 (ESXi 6.5)

Part 2: HOW TO: Connect to the VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.5 (ESXi 6.5) using the vSphere (HTML5 Web) Host Client 6.5

I would install ESXi on a USB flash drive or SD card in your server, and then use all 5TB as a datastore, you may as want to consider RAID6, with two disk failure rather than RAID5.

Check your hardware is on the HCL.

Or you could purchase essentials for approx $600.

You will need to purchase Microsoft licenses.

If there's only 2 physical CPUs then Free ESX 6 is your best option :)

Here's a nice run though of what to do

Andrew is correct of course.

But VMware Support is very important, so you may wish to consider the paid version. The cost is reasonable in view the business you are trying to run
