We got two machines for relatives.  One person really needed light weight and long battery life and had normal (not lightweight) computing needs. They have a MacBook Air.

The other person is running a business and need stronger computing power but is always near an electrical outlet if need be. Weight was not as critical . This person has a MacBook Pro.

As noted above, it depends on your needs.

You can now, finally get 16GB RAM

by Apple, or third party? For recent model or the latest model only?
You can't add RAM to modern Mac laptops.  They are soldered on the motherboard and have no expansion slots.  They just have a 16 GB RAM option available for purchase now.  The OS keeps getting more bloated, just like Windows.
