I have a development nginx system that is requiring https to login. Is there a switch or variable that will make admin to default to http instead?

This site isn't propagated so no ssl on site.

This may or may not be possible.

Best if you dig into your site with testing tools like curl.

Difficult to know how to suggest your start, without an actual URL to test.

Either provide a URL or you'll have to start testing with curl, while digging into your logs + config files.

Tip: More than likely you'll still have to dig into your logs + config files to complete this process.

Tip: A great way to get hacked is to login to a WordPress site with HTTP, instead of HTTPS.

To me, there's never a good reason to every run HTTP anymore, even for dev/staging/test sites.

I personally wrap everything in certs. Period. No exception. Because using HTTP plain text logins will surely get you hacked eventually.

In WP, check your settings by going to Settings->General. The url should be /wp-admin/options-general.php.  Do you have https://example.com or http://example.com?

Another place to check is your wp-config.php file.  See if you have a line that looks like
define('FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true);

Open in new window

https://wordpress.org/support/article/administration-over-ssl/

And finally check your htaccess if it is doing the redirection to https.

If you do make any changes, it is a good idea to go to your WP admin and in settings->permalinks (wp-admin/options-permalink.php) it save after verifying.
