asked on

share point, office 365

we have at present Share point 2010 on premise server.

we have on premise active directory and user accounts are synced through AAD sync to office 365

we have mailboxes in office 365  there is no on premise exchange.

i have been asked to evaluate whether we need to migrate to sharepoint online or to share point 2013 or 2016

can somebody let me know pros and cons of migrating to share point on premise (2016 )  or share point online

Upside:
  • No longer have to deal with hardware or VMs for Sharepoint in house. (This assumes you migrate existing data to new environment)
  • No need for opening up anything inbound on firewall.
  • Ability to leverage Intune MAM for data protection without having to consider on site system.
  • System maintenance responsibilities shift to Microsoft
  • No need to upgrade or update software

Downsides:
  • Shared environment (no dedicated hardware and the like)
  • Microsoft support can be a mixed bag
  • Dependence on third party for subset of security (requirement definition becomes very important here. Also many organizations overlook that they are still responsible for some things)
  • Data in the cloud (this depends on your viewpoint)
  • If you ever opt for ATP, Sharepoint data is covered
Also, if you have customized sites on prem, they may not migrate the way you think. SharePoint Online is based on 2019 and many of the templates in 2010 are no longer supported.
