Our license subscription is about to expire. Would there be a technological reason to purchase a 1 year renewal vs a 3 year? The 3 year offers a small savings.

vSphere doesn't have a subscription option. What you're seeing is your support subscription. Overall if it's needed then you're better off to buy the 3 year to get the savings if you're able to get the funding.

Cost

3 years upfront is often cheaper than a year at a time for Support and Subscription.

You may also consider changing from Production to Basic if cost and budgets are the issue

no problems and you’ve also got Pay for Incident support but this would not give you updates and upgrades for free!
