Access beginner question : databases organization (1)

Hello the experts :)

I'm just starting with Access where I simply want to file and sort ALL my administrative stuff, from the classic contacts to my files organization, my various matrix categories, everything.

Simple question : should I put EVERYTHING in the same database, or build like 3-4 (contacts, files management, todo/projects management, purchasing, for example)

Thank you very much & kind regards,

Magpie

The first step to do is to grab a piece of paper and a pen and write down your current needs and your future needs with as much detail you can...this would be your blueprint for everything you do.
Usually for such kind of recording a single application is the best solution as you don't want to chase different versions of multiple applications.
P.S. since you explicitly indicated that you are going to use MS Access please add the tag Microsoft Access...it would be helpful for you and us

ASKER

Thank you John,

I've already done this and it's kinda expanded on a whole paper carnet as there are many many topics involved here, but I'm reaching a point where I need to start to go with the inputs - its too messy now on paper and I need to know how it actually works because I wont organize stuff the same way if... many things (if I can link & update easily vs. excel & outlook & quickviewer / if I can use VB or powershell to do this or that / if I need one single database or several ; etc)

I don't understand "multiple applications", what applications are you talking about ? Application as softwares, application as database ? Sorry I don't understand. I was asking about databases within Access, do I want a single .accdb file with ALL my admin stuff in it, or several ones ?

EDIT : I thought I had already tagged it "microsoft access" (and also "databases") not sure what I did wrong but I will pay more attention next time :)

All clear thank you very much :)

(Though I'm curious why a database is called "application", I will ask google to enlight me on this definition ^^)

John, that's perfectly clear, thank you very much (again) :)

noci, thank you very much but you overestimate me ;) I don't WANT "MS access only", I'm a simple administrative assistant looking for a way to stop looking around everywhere for her stuff and I think the real databases are far away from my reach ! Plus I don't have much choice as it's the only solution available to me as basic user in my (large) company. I think (not even sure) we use MS SQL for our global organization but I'm pretty confident I won't be authorized to access any of the "real IT stuff" ;)
Access...just for "knowing"..can connect to just about every known Database..
