Redirecting Shares from 2008r2 to Netapp SAN
I had this question after viewing changing DNS to redirect users to new file share.
I have an old 2008r2 File server that is a cross-domain server (used by users in multiple trusted domains) I need to move the shares to a NetApp SAN where I have created multiple new shares. I would normally do this by Group policy and remap the shares for users. However, due to not being able to trace all users and what domains they are on and what shares they are using. I am looking to create a DNS Alias to the new locations for each domain.
Any help or recommended course of action to do this would be greatly appreciated.

Why not use DFS namespaces? Surely that would be a simpler, streamlined and centralized solution?
On top of that, drop them into your top level forest and then replicate down through your child domains for access. It'll take a while but when it's done, it'll be solid.

The trusts are at both domain and forest level.
Also with regards to the DFS shares, I would need to stand up another server 2016 to work with the 2008r2 server then drop off the 2008r2 server leaving only the 2016 server attached to the Netapp shares.
I guess this issue is that the Netapp San shares are already published by the SAN and can be seen on the network. So do I remove the SAN shares or leave them in situ as well as the new DFS shares?
But my main goal is to move the 2008r2 Shares to the SAN either by as you mentioned making them DFS Shares or via some other means. This needs to be done so that the current share mappings across all domains are not changed, but simply redirected to the new file locations.

Thanks again Alex for your help on this one. In the end, due to the full domain trust, I could set up DFS between the 2 servers. I then moved the files to the 2016 server and moved the server to the other domain. Due to the trust, all the Security remained intact and allowed me to then share the data from the new domain and remove the old server
