Upgrading from SQL 2008 to SQL 2008 R2 (Server runs Windows 2008 R2)

Hi, we have an SQL 2008 server (version 10.0.1600.22) running on Windows 2008 R2 Server.

I'd like to upgrade to version 10.50.4000 (SQL 2008 R2 Server).

Is there a way for me to still do that? what about my SQL license? (Standard), will it be kept?

Ok, I'll bite.  Why?  Both 2008 and R2 reached end of life last month, and if you're going to go through the cost and effort of a conversion it would make more sense to upgrade to a much more current version.

We had a SAP server running on this old SQL 2008 server, but we bought a new one & still can use the SQL license for another purpose.. The other program that can use it currently runs on SQL express & can really benefit from the boost in memory the licensed Standard version allows..
Only problem is that the program that uses the SQL express is running version 10.50.4000 (2008 R2..) & the database can not be moved to the licensed 2008 Standard version (version 10.0.1600.22)..
If you know of a safe way to convert the DB back to that version that may work as well but it sounds a bit dangerous to me as I don't even know what I might lose in the DB in going back between these 2 versions..
Guess the licensing issue would be the biggest obstacle as it's already end of life for both but upgrading to 2016 or 2017 would probably mean some 20000USD or so, which my boss would not approve anyway & would just prefer for the users to suffer some performance issues with the sql expres.. :/
