Hmmm, maybe I need to stick with standard personalized pens that I can leave every time I'm asked to sign a dinner check.

I have to be able to get the cost down way lower than that.
I see one down to $10.23 if you can wait as late as October 22 for delivery.
Thanks Nick but I've got to go way way lower in price. I didn't think this through well. I've got to get it under a dollar.
The best I see is around $1.84 if you order 25. Excluding shipping
Under a dollar is going to be impossible for a consumer. The manufacturing costs alone just for a tiny USB drive are over a dollar and that doesn't include a pen. Even if you bought in large bulk, it would likely still be a few dollars. Add shipping to that and you're probably looking at a bare minimum of $5 per, and you'd have to order in bulk.
Thanks Nick

I don't see that. Can you send a link?
IMHO, with thigs that you provide and go into a computer, you get what you pay for, and sometime you might get what you are not expecting.

My suggestion define what you are looking for
I.e. what capacity of storage do you want? Which type, USB 2.0 or USB 3.0.
The ink pen, is incidental.
To reduce your cost, see if you can get a sponsor whose info will be advertised on your chachkies.
or have their chachkies included in the .. along with your USB jumpdrive pen.
i.e. local businesses that the group might be ......?
My error the $1.84 was for USB only.

This is as low as I see anywhere. Amazon
Price:      $6.75 & FREE Shipping
Capacity: 4GB

8 gig add 39 cents.
Also, remember that you get what you pay for. The lower the unit cost, the higher the risk that one or more of the units will be defective. To decrease costs, manufacturers have to either use cheaper, lower-quality materials and/or decrease human cost like QC quality. So the lower the cost, the greater the chance that the gift will break in any number of ways (either upfront or worse, after the giving). So you should also consider how it will be received if the reminder of you is a broken pen and/or USB drive.
That would really be OK with me.  The purpose is to advertise a local cause to a local audience via a URL printed on the pens. So I might be giving a pen and/or 5 x 8 index card to virtually everyone I run into locally. So quality, in this case, would really be a secondary issue.
Why not just give a regular pen, then? Those would be far less expensive (easy to get under $1), easily printable, and the pen would probably work better than if there was a USB drive attached. Sort of the point of branded gifts is that they're usable so the user is seeing the advertisement every time they use it. But if it's broken and they toss it, then you're losing visibility.

That sounds like an enormous hassle and logistical challenge.
it seems you have put much thought into the matter, and might be consider a charitable ...  if related to recent incidents in your area.

the strength of the cause should match the functionality of the items as they hopefully lasts longer and be carried, handled for quite some time.
local businesses whose names will appear on the swag bag with trinkets inside.

I guess I should have asked what your timeframe is.
Hmmm,

I do have a color laser printer at home but I have not been able to find clear decals. Then you have the problem of white ink.

you have a point about it being very easy to just buy the pens.

Maybe I can figure out how to personalize them myself.
