What are some symptoms to tell yo that the link between Excel and PowerPoint is broken?
If I create a chart in PowerPoint that is linked to Excel, what would indicate that the linkage between to two applications is not working?
What can cause a  PowerPoint chart that is linked to Excel to not work?

I was thinking that I need to configure PowerPoint to updates links to Excel automatically.

If you right-click the chart and choose Edit chart or Edit workbook and you get an error that says the linked file is not available, then the linked file is not available. That could mean the Excel file is not in the folder it's expected to be in, or it could mean that the Excel file has been renamed.

If you choose File > Info > Edit Links to Files, this dialog will tell you what files PowerPoint is trying to link to. (If you break the links using this dialog's Break Link button, when you right-click the chart on the slide, the Edit options will be greyed out.)

If you don't have an Edit Links to Files option in File > Info, then the charts are embedded, not linked.
