Have 2 DHCP Servers Windows Server 2008 and Sonicwall
I have a Server running Server 2008 R2 Standard and a Sonicwall TZ500. I setup a DHCP Scope on the server to be 192.168.100.13 - 100 and on the Sonicwall 192.168.100.101 - 254. The problem im having is that the server will run out of IPs and the Sonicwall wont take over. Im not sure if i need to enable IP helper on the sonicwall. Does anyone have experience with this type of setup.
I'm wondering why you would Have-2-DHCP-Servers on two different devices giving out IPs. I know if you have a router and a server both set as DHCP server,, that the server will stop the DHCP Service. Sometimes if I'm running a router for DHCP where there is a high turnover of devices wanting service, and few are domain members, then having the router do the DHCP task seems logical. That said if the server is just a p. DO this if there is a lot of short transient traffic. lain file server running standard apps, make sure you keep the Lease time low - 30-60 minutes
if you have 2 dhcp servers like you do then it is a crap shoot as to which device connects to which dhcp server first and gets an ip address. A request for an ip address is a broadcast to any dhcp server 'hey I need an IP address'

Unless you can configure them to operate as a cluster. On both of them, which would still get you ONE active DHCP server
only with a backup if a system goes down. [ the DHCP servers need to exchange all active leases, releases besides a ping of who is master ... ].
The DHCP helper is meant for other networks to forward requests to a specific DHCP server and relay the answers back.
