Slow PC performance using Thunderbolt docking station
My new laptop is slow when using a USB docking station and external monitor. When I first plug it in, performance is fine (no issues with control inputs or video). However, after rebooting, the computer slows down dramatically - when I resize or drag windows, they seem to stutter across the screen, and mouse / keyboard is either laggy or stutters as well.
I tried doing a factory reset, then installing Mcafee, Updating Windows, and then updating drivers (have not installed any applications other than Chrome or Firefox) and get the same symptoms. My hardware is pretty 'beefy' - I don't think that's the issue, but even after installing all of the drivers from Asus, Dell, and Targus, I still have these issues.
The hardware is:
1. ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo - 32 GB of RAM, I-9 processor, Nvidia RTX 2060 graphics.
2. Dell 3415W Monitor
3. Targus DSU400 USB docking station, connected via Thunderbold
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can try to resolve it

CompProbSolv - Thanks for replying. I forgot to mention in the question - I did look at the performance in the task manager - the network utilization seems to spike, but the CPU, memory, and disk all stay below 15%.
"the network utilization seems to spike"
That seems very odd if you're just resizing or moving windows. Are these local folders (vs. on a server)?

Yes - they're all local Windows programs (IE, Windows Explorer, etc.)

It seems to be better when I duplicate the screen.
I'm afraid I can't offer much. I was trying to determine whether or not this was a thunderbolt/docking station issue or something more general.
Have you discussed this with Targus' tech support?

CompProbSolv - Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. It turns out that for some reason I need to use the main monitor in addition to the larger external monitor.
That seems odd, but glad to hear you found the solution.
Be sure to stay up to date on drivers. That may resolve the issue in the future such that you can use just the monitor you wish to.

Yeah, I'm hoping so. The laptop model is brand new, so the right drivers might eventually make their way down.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
Once you have a better idea of what is the bottleneck (CPU, Memory, Disk, etc.) then you can approach how to resolve it.
