asked on

where can I purchase a Packard Bell AR-851 radio for $100 or less?

Hello and Good Evening Everyone,

I am wondering if it is possible to locate a vintage 1960's Packard Bell AR-851 radio for $100 or less.   While I was able to find one on eBay, it is very high at a price above $700.  That said I would like to locate one at a much more affordable price.  Unfortunately, my exhaustive searches have come up with nothing with respect to what I would like to pay for one.

If anyone could possibly find a Packard Bell AR-851 radio online for sale at $100 or less, I will certainly be interested in checking it out and purchasing it.  Seeing that this will be a very difficult search based upon the criteria mentioned, I will understand if it fails.

Thanks in advance for any attention that might be given to this quest.

Does it have to work?  If it works, I can't see it selling for less than $500 as there is a lot of time involved in reconditioning old radio equipment.  Technician time of someone who knows how to work on tube equipment should go for at least $75/hour, and while tubes are still available it's exceedingly difficult to get HV electrolytic capacitors of the type which were used as filter caps, and one cap alone can go $25 used-but-working.

In the condition of "this just came out of grampa's barn" it is probably possible to get one for less than $100, but it would take several hundred dollars of time and effort to get it working.
That particular radio is a collectors item since it was used as a prop on Gilligan's Island .  It is relatively rare  and has a large demand therefor supply demand curves dictate the price.
Anything older than 1970 in most categories is considered vintage. I see one on Ebay that sold for under $90 but it did not work. No sound.
You might have to rely on yard sales, flea markets. And that method might take you months or years to stumble onto one.

It was a prop on the TV show.
Here is a video that explains the collector value.

Nick,

I never could find an option or link to purchase the radio.  Could you help me out with that part?

          Thank you very much :-)

Send them an email. They can likely weigh it for you and that weight can be used on the postal website to calculate the postage to you and you'll have to arrange to send them the funds and trust them to send the item. Unless you want them to send it COD. Do you have Ebay? There is a way for them to list it so no one but YOU can buy it. They need an Ebay account too.

Hello Nick,

I am new at Craigslist.  As such, there is a new learning curve for me.  If I am not mistaken, I can take the email address given by you and send them a correspondence identifying my interest in the radio.  Also, I would be much more comfortable purchasing it on eBay because I have an account with this company with an established history as a buyer.

In closing, I will go ahead and send the seller an email using the given address of 1295b96471737bd802503fe71f6b0a2@sale.craigslist.org

If you should have any other suggestions or tips, feel free to let me know.

Once again, many thanks for this lead :-)  I will let you know what happens.

Ask them if they have an Ebay account. If they do not then they could send it to you COD. You pay nothing until it arrives.

Hello Everyone,

Thank you for the helpful information given here in reply to my question in addition to the useful links.  I did contact the seller in CA, but, we were unable to work out a deal.  The radio is pickup only and not available for shipping.  Seeing that I live in TN, I will have to pass on that business proposal.  It is too bad though because it would have been perfect for what I have in mind in addition to the price I was willing to pay.

George,
The weight of that radio would by light and based on my own Ebay shipping I think it could be sent to you for under $20 which is a total of under $100. The seller may never be able to sell it locally.
If you desire further assistance to buy this item let me know.

Nick,

Thank you for your eagerness and motivation to help me.  At this point, I believe it will be a waiting game to see if the owner will be able to sell it locally.  If not, he did receive my email expressing my interest in purchasing it online.  I guess I will just have to wait and see what happens.

             Thanks again, Nick :-)
