How to adjust Firefox window

Hi, I have just noticed that when I try to make Firefox smaller by clicking on the center (square) type icon on the upper right, it just kind of re positions the full screen but does not make it smaller.  I tried it on Chrome and it worked just fine as well as Excel and Word.  I want to have an excel document take up the left half of the screen while I look stuff up in Firefox on the right side of the screen.  I've never run into this before and would appreciate your help.
Thanks

I think you are seeing  normal Windows operation. Clicking toggles between  maximum view and a view where the size can be changed. If this view for that application has been set to be the same as the maximum size  it could be hard to tell the difference between it and the maximised view. However the top left icon should show a double square and it should be possible to adjust the bottom and left margins.

Okay, I just figured it out.  I was able to move the screen from the left to the middle of the page and now when I click on the square icon on the top right, I see a double box and when I click it, it adjust to cover only half the screen which is what I wanted. Thank you
