Files take a long time to open when i double click them. If i open from within application, they open fast.

Weird problem here.  Thru windows explorer, if I double click on a file, could be pdf, word or excel.  The computer takes about a minute and a half to load the program and open the file.  If I open a program and use the file open option select the same file, it loads it immediately.  This happens with every file I have tested so far.

I tried disabling all startup options and disabling the antivirus.  That didn't help.

The delay is the time it takes to launch the application (Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
As stated above, it could be the delay in the application itself loading.

As for THAT delay, it could be low memory resources, fussy security software, etc.

How much RAM is in the machine and how much is available? Also look at task manager and see if the CPU is spiking due to background processes, etc.

When I open the application it opens right away. Then I select file open and the files open right away. 8gb of ram about half available. No programs in task manager with high cpu usage.
Are these files stored locally or on a network share?
Oh left out an important detail. They are shared but this problem occurs on the host computer.  From the other workstations they open in a few seconds.
How many other computers are accessing the shared folder on the host?
2 other computers
On the slower machine, have you looked through Event Viewer to see if it gives any details?

I guess as one test you could unplug the network cable and see how it performs offline.
