In place SQL Server upgrade 2016 to 2019
We just upgraded our Domain Controller from Server 2016 to 2019. Went great, no hitches.
We now want to do our secondary server. It's Server 2016 Standard and runs SQL Server 2016. Can this be done as an in place upgrade without doing anything special for SQL? I realize we need a good backup just in case, but wanted to make sure it will carry over all of the SQL settings and such without any issues. All this server does is run a SQL program for our accounting and inventory.

Management just wants to stay current on the latest and greatest. I have put in that it is not necessary but they want to move to it anyways. I will relay about the one way pass/fail and go from there. Thank you.
From your question they are updating the OS. It would be similar that they resurface the road based on new developments while driving the same car.
make sure you have a good back that you restored in a lab, before you go down this road.

The reason I commonly oppose in-place upgrades especially when there is an application, company significant application, is that the upgrade attempt is a one way pass/fail. If it goes through, you then have to verify, the application is not impacted.
There is current rush to get from 2016.
