Backup failing on a new Server 2016 Hyper-v Host
We just installed a new Server 2016 STD.
WE have a host server running 3 SM's in Hyper-V
We are using the built in server backup software.
We are backing up to a USB device. It seems to be failing quite often with this error
so far I tried reformatting the drives and re-adding them as a backup destination.
these are all the event id's that are in event viewer when the backup fails
517,
153 (Disk), THe I0 Operation at logical block address 0x25681e8 for Disk1
1001,
513 (cap12), after the 513 error the backup drive disappears from disk management and we have to power cycle the drive to bring it back online.
129, Reset to device \Device\Raidport5, was issued

Server make/model?
Backup vendor and version?
USB2 or USB3 drive?
Is the place where the drive is kept too hot?
It sounds like the drive is defective.

We are using the backup that is built into server software.
we are not using third party software but it seems we should.
We usually use StorageCraft backup but this client does not want a monthly fee for backup.
Backupchain does look promising.
How about Veeam Backup? is that any good?

In my history of doing backups, Veritas Backup Exec has almost always been at the top of the list as they support most everything:

It appears to be a bad block on the source (disk1). Need more hardware details as a proper server would have this recorded in the hardware log on motherboard or RAID controller.
Veeam is free for the first 10 virtual machines and our first place go-to for backup at the host and cluster node level.
ShadowProtect can be purchased in single, three pack, or more up-front for virtual machines. The catch is that it is in-guest.
We've been deploying ShadowProtect since BackupExec failed on us spectacularly back in the day and recently in the last three years or so have started to use Veeam. Both have their merits but our preference is for Veeam across the board.

So far its working good.
A full recovery should be attempted to make sure it actually does what it says it will do.
We do this with all of our new deploys. We deploy into production on the recovered VMs.

Will do!! Thanks!!
You've still got a faulty backup disk. no backup software makes a good device go offline.
