hi,

we are using Sharepoint 2007. we have a sharepoint viewers group configured where these users are only to view the excel files that are uploaded.
how can we hide or remove the options to save as/download a copy of the file and remove editing of these excel files from the site?

any help would be appreciated.
thanks

You need to use user groups and configure those groups with the permissions you want for that group.

For example you might want a "Read Only" group where they can read documents but thats it.

You might even want a Specific Group have specific permissions fopr a specific Directory of files. You can configure a User Group just for that example.

Heres a couple of links that should help:

Out of box, in no way SharePoint can stop a user from downloading a file if the file is visible in view. The is no difference in downloading and previewing file in library so permissions will not help.

However there are at least two solutions that you may consider:

  • Do not use views. Instead, create web part that lists files from library without link to a file, or with a link to application page that displays file (such as Office Web Apps). Note that Office Web Apps is not supported in SharePoint 2007
  • Use Right Management Services that will allow you to encrypt file in such a way that files cannot be saved on disk, thus editing will be futile

Note again that both methods require a lot of effort (designing, developing).

I dont see any attachment, and I'm not sure the Author is wanting a file to be seen and not seen. It looks to me that the file is there and view-able but the want to make it not editable or downloadable and there are definitely settings for those options. Please check the links I supplied above.
