1) make sure you do not have network segment overlap
2) run netstat -rn or route print to see the current routing table, then establish the VPN connection and repeat.
3) get properties/settings of the VPN connection and make sure you do not use the remote as your gateway.

The box was checked to use the remote gateway. I unchecked and reloaded the VPN and it works great now.
