Access 2010 file won't open unless we run other Office apps first.

We have an Access 2010 ADE file that we open using Access 2010 Runtime. On a new Windows 10 VDI template we have installed O365 Pro Plus and then installed Access 2010 Runtime SP2 with the remaining updates. The first time a user logs into the desktop the Access file opens without issue but once the user logs out the next time they login they get the error "the file is not in the correct format for a microsoft access project". If we open Outlook, Word or Excel (Latest Pro Plus version) before the Access program it opens fine but if you try the access program first you get the error above.

Any ideas what might be causing this and what opening Outlook, Word or Excel does to the Access 2010 file that allows it to open?

Thanks

I would assume that launching one of the other Office products "sets" the environment correctly.

I'd have to assume there's an issue with the installation of Office, or the Runtime. I'd start by removing the runtime and then reinstalling. If that doesn't work, perhaps a repair of Office would suffice, but you may have to do a full uninstall/reinstall.
Ditto what Scott said, but I'd also add that sometimes security on the registry will prevent the environment from being set properly.

Create a shortcut for Access so you can right click and "Run as admin" to see if that resolves the problem.

Jim.
How about taking a look at the event viewer...maybe you will find a clue...
If not then you have to use Process Monitor to find out the error....not an easy task

Thanks all, i agree that running one of the Office 2016 program 'sets' the environment but i'd really like to track down what this means to see if we can automate it, i'd rather not go down the road of auto opening Outlook or another Office Pro Plus app to get it working.

We have already reinstalled Access Runtime and the service packs and it seems to make no difference. I also tried with full Access just to see but that made no difference either.

I will go for a repair of Office Pro Plus and see what happens.
Nothing in the event logs and the repair didn't work either, strange as we have this exact setup on another site and it works fine.. it also works fine on my local machine and once you have opened any of the O365 Pro Plus applications, just not before then.
Then its time for Process Monitor as this is the only tool in my knowledge that can "reveal" such nasty cases...
Just google around for tutorials that show the usage of it...
Normally ...you should see something like Permission Denied (usually for registry entries with wrong permissions) ...of missing (lost entries, files..)
You shouldn't have to automate this. This is abnormal behavior, and you need to get to the root of it.

In cases like this - especially when you have identical machines that don't exhibit the same behavior -  sometimes you must do a full uninstall/reinstall.

Here's a link on doing a full uninstall:
