Locking in the Values of First Line Indent and Hanging Ident

In Word, I want to set the first line indent to 0.15" and the hanging indent to 0.25", but no what I do setting one seems to reset the other. Is there way to "lock these values" so Word does not try to help?

This is a puzzling question. Basically each of those two settings does the opposite of the other.

Graham is right: the two settings are mutually exclusive in that both apply to the first line of a paragraph.

If you want the entire paragraph to be indented by 0.5 inches, you need to enter that setting as the “left” indent. Then a hanging indent of 0.25 inches will leave its first line at 0.15 inches, and further indent the remaining lines by the additional hanging indent — meaning they will be 0.40 inches from the left margin of the page (or column).
