Exchange 2016 creating Alias Email

Hi expert,

I was wondering how to create alias email for exchange 2016 server?

Existing we have alias email support@company.com (an email address that doesn't have mailbox), and it ties to primary mailbox c@company.com.

All email send to this alias email support@company.com will redirect the email to the primary mailbox c@company.com and then duplicate to other user mailbox.

How to do the same in exchange 2016 server?

Is creating mail contact plus adding mail flow rule in EMC is the only way?

Please advise.

Thanks.

Yes, that is the way you need to configure it.
Just go to the properties of the mailbox and add an email address to it.  I've got probably 30 different email addresses to myself.

Frankly, for a support address, you'd probably be better off creating a group mailbox and giving people access to it.
see:
Add Email address:

Group Mailbox:

Distribution group - email sent to support@ goes to multiple other people @
(Technically, you can make a distribution group of one as well and this would, in essence, do the same as adding an email address, just be very sloppy.)

Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback.

But which way is the most suitable to my scenario?  mail contact + mail flow rule or distribution group?

If we create a group distribution mailbox for support, would this count as one mailbox licenses? we want to avoid using cal licenses.

thanks.
CALs are assigned to HUMAN BEINGS, not mailboxes.  EVERY human being who uses Exchange (an individual mailbox for them AND/OR a shared mailbox requires a CAL).  If you have a bunch of support reps WITHOUT personal mailboxes but SHARING a single mailbox, you STILL NEED A CAL FOR EACH SUPPORT REP!
Put simply, you're not going to save any money (and be legal) by manipulating who has a mailbox and who doesn't.  And since things are licensed by the human being, you could have 1000 GROUP mailboxes and it won't cost you any more in licensing costs than if you have 0.

As for which is best for you, I don't work in your environment, I can't be certain.  If I were setting up a client to start, I would use a shared mailbox.  It makes the most sense when you have multiple people needing access to a mailbox and the ability to potentially send from that mailbox (that can potentially get tricky to setup though).

Licensing Disclaimer
License information provided here is "best efforts".  The comments of the respondents are based on interpretation of the license agreements and their knowledge of the particular laws and regulations in their geographic location.  Laws in your location may invalidate certain aspects of the license and/or licenses can change.  (For example, at least one major nation's laws allow OEM licenses to be transferred to new hardware). "They told me on Experts-Exchange" will not be a valid excuse in an audit.  You need to contact the license granting authority to confirm any advice offered here.
Hello,

Best suitable scenario for you is to add a smtp mail address to your mailbox.
Login ECP, click recipients, search your name and find your user mailbox, double click on it, click email address on the left side, click + (plus) button, select smtp address and enter your additional email address.

Important Note:
You must uncheck "Automatically update email addresses based on the email address policy applied to this recipient" checkbox.

Have a trouble free day;-)

Hi Murat,

I added the smtp email address into my mailbox - test@company.com

But "test@company.com" will not be able to add into another mailbox.. guess this is not suitable for my scenario as i need the email to be duplicated to other users as well.
Hello C Y,

If you want to deliver an email to more than one mailbox, there are several ways to do this.

1 - You can create a distribution group and add each user as a member to this group.
Additionaly, your users can send email from group address if you give "send as" permission to a user.
I think this is the best method.

2 - By creating a user mailbox, you can configure the "Mail Flow" settings and send a copy of all mails to the users you want.
I do not recommend this method unless there is a special requirement.

3 - You can create a shared mailbox, and you can authorize anyone you want to see the mail that comes to this mailbox.
This is a good method for collaborative mailboxes, but it can sometimes be difficult to access emails from a mobile phone or send mail using mobile devices.

4 - By creating a user mailbox, you can grant "Full Access" to all users you want to see the e-mails at this address.
In Outlook, every user you authorize can view this mailbox and send mail from that address.

If you decide to use any of these methods and need assistance with how to do so, please let me know.
I'll give you more details about the method you want to continue.
