Hi,

I'd need to upgrade some software on a vm, the software uses backend SQL.
I can take a snapshot of the vm, but how do I backup (restore?) the SQL (2008)  in a quick & simple way?

Backup the entire VM, or use SQL to backup the databases.

What hypervisor - Veeam Backup and Replication has backup options for VMware vSphere and Hyper-v.

If you just snapshot the SQL VM the transaction logs won't get truncated so will grow and grow, you need application level aware backup that works within the guest (or SQL's inbuilt backup). Most backup suites (including Veeam) have such agents.

Sorry, should have been more clear: sql is NOT a vm. So I d need a simple command or gui steps to backup/restore.

In SQL management studio right click each database - schedule - backup. Also run a Windows backup to backup Windows plus the bkf files the backup creates..

Also you may not know that Synology have now launched backup for their NAS units!
