Annoying Android Bluetooth behaviour

I have a Galaxy Note 9 with Android Pie (version 9.0) installed and have an issue with it.

From time to time as most people do I listen to music on my phone with Bluetooth headset. I also have a Bluetooth receiver in the car for hands free calling when driving.

Those aren't an issue in themself, the issue is whenever the phone connects to the Bluetooth device in the car it automatically starts playing the music I was previously listening to. It only occurs with the car device because that automatically switches on with the car so automatically connects. I can even have been listening through USB speakers previously and it will still start automatically when connected to Bluetooth device.

It doesn't seem to start the App that I used (eg Google Play Music, TuneIn radio app or Amazon Music) but I get the play control notification ( << || >>) in the notifications area.

Its easy enough to get rid of, tap the pause and then swipe the notification away. That's if I notice it, it could be that I don't notice and it is potentially streaming music (TuneIn or Amazon Music) using my mobile data, not a massive data usage but shouldn't be happening.

Is there a setting in Android somewhere that I can change to stop music automatically playing whenever I reconnect to a Bluetooth device? Autoplay setting or something.

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,

What kind of car do you drive? Or what stereo if you're using an aftermarket one with Bluetooth connectivity.

My wife drives a Hyundai Santa Fe and it will occasionally auto play a podcast or audiobook that was last played when we hit the Media button to switch to the bluetooth connection, but generally it doesn't.

I used to drive a Ford of some sort for work and that car would always auto play whenever I connected to it, so it sounds exactly like what you are running into.

Since all the car manufacturers implement BT connectivity slightly differently I think it's more an issue with the car than your phone, I'd be happy to look into it more.

It's not built in to the car, it's a plug in device with bluetooth receiver and then fm transmitter to the car.
Ahh, it definitely sounds like that would be the culprit. Did your receiver/transmitter  come with any documentation?
Goto Bluetooth setting and click the Bluetooth receiver in the car for hands free calling.

Disable the Media audio

In doing so, you cannot listen to music with the Bluetooth receiver in the car for hands free calling.
Don't want to switch off media as I do sometimes use it to listen to music in the car.

Just don't want it to play automatically.

I have looked up the Android 9 Open Source project website and there is no native way to prevent autoplay of the media which you have been playing when you disconnected the Bluetooth last time. You need a third-party app like the Tasker app mentioned in the link below to stop the autoplay.

sorry couldn't be of more help on this on Rob. I'll poke around for some additional information, but it may be dependent on the device you're pairing to. Android doesn't have autoplay settings in the OS for each device you pair to which is too bad.

There may be an app that can help though if you were willing to go that route.
Rather drastic resolution, I changed the car and now have built in Bluetooth connectivity. Problem doesn't occur in new car so I guess it must have been something to do with the pairing of the stand alone device.
Your final solution resembles the Animal Farm quotes
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” .
