You're correct.
Magento, from a little experience years ago, requires far more PHP skill than WordPress.
It always seemed, provided extensions had to be recoded to get them working.

Note: You may find using WordPress may provide a better solution, as WordPress can be easily tuned to handle very high traffic.
Magento is very difficult to tune/scale for high traffic.
For low traffic, Magento is sufficient.

I decided to use Wix.
Too much easier to configure and start e-commerce also...

It looks Magento has a more technical and elaborated approach than Wordpress - mainly for whom uses PHP.
Another issue:
I installed Magento 2.2.3 but after the site is empty and I need a simple template to make it runs. Like Madison Island - at Magento 1.9 has.
