Why do I get a pop-up error in PaperPort?

When I start PaperPort 14, an error message pops up (see SnipIt).   There is no link to Outlook in the send to bar.   PaperPort then works normally if I close the pop-up window.User generated imageUser generated image

Hi DoctorK,
From the thread that Dr Klahn mentioned, I know that you're on PaperPort 14.5 and that you have Patch 1 installed, so those usual suggestions are not the solution here. As we discussed back then, and as my EE article on the subject indicates, there are numerous issues with PP14 in Office 2016/Office 365...and with Office 2019, too. I suspect that your latest problem is another one of them.

Btw, did you recently switch from 32-bit to 64-bit Outlook? That may have triggered the problem, as I see that it is the 64-bit Outlook COM object that caused the crash (as you likely know, PP14 is a 32-bit program, although it does have some 64-bit support, such as the PaperPort Image Printer).

My suggestion is to wait for the upcoming PaperPort 14.7. As you may have seen in the news, Kofax acquired Nuance's Document Imaging Division, including OmniPage, PaperPort, and Power PDF. In case you missed it, here's a link to the announcement:
Kofax Announces the Closing of its Acquisition of Nuance Document Imaging

I've been communicating recently with my Nuance Tier 3 technical support contact, who, of course, has moved to Kofax since the acquisition. He gave me a heads-up (with permission to share it in user groups/forums) that Kofax will be shipping PP14.7 in about a month...and that was about a month ago, so we should be close!

There is some good news in it, but he does want to set expectations that it is not a full overhaul. This update mostly rebrands the product from Nuance to Kofax, and it also fixes all the broken product links due to the acquisition. This sets the stage for the work required by Kofax to move forward with PaperPort post-acquisition, but they also took the opportunity to make a few very nice changes (DoctorK — note, especially, item #4 below):

(1) Replaced the long-in-the-tooth PaperPort Image Printer with the modern Power PDF printer.

(2) Updated PaperPort to install natively on Windows 10 without the need to install Patch 1 prior to launch. The reason that PP14.5 without Patch 1 crashes on W10 is that W10 puts the application into compatibility mode. They updated the software so that will not happen anymore. However, if you manually enable any of the Windows compatibility modes, it will cause a crash. Thus, they documented this behavior and stated that it is not fixable in the current code base, i.e., this will be an item for the next Major release (but there is no ETA on that).

(3) Updated web browser integrations.

(4) Updated Microsoft Office integrations. This a huge enhancement, imo. The initial release of PP14.7 adds Office 2016 integration, including the desktop apps via Office 365. Due to QA time and translation timings for the PP14.7 documentation, support for Office 2019 will be announced via a Knowledge Base article around launch time (since the doc went to press, it has already passed QA testing).

(5) Upgrade cost (if any) for PP14.7 is TBD.

I'll post back here when I get word that 14.7 is available. Regards, Joe

If I open Outlook then PaperPort, the Outlook icon appears in the Send To bar.   If I open PaperPort first, I get thew error message.User generated image
Makes sense - there is no target process available if Outlook is not already running.  It is something like clicking on an HTML "mailto:" link without an MAPI server process running.  If the error is unacceptable, perhaps run Outlook minimized at startup?

Yes, that is one of the (many!) problems with Office 2016/2019/365 and the hope is that the updated Microsoft Office integrations in PP14.7 (item #4 in my previous post) will fix it.

Btw, what version of Outlook do you have? What bit level?
Office 365 subscription 64-bit.

Thanks to both of you.
You're very welcome...and my thanks back at you for the Testimonial...much appreciated!

I sent an email to my Nuance/Kofax contact and will post back here when I get an update on the ETA for PP14.7. Regards, Joe
I received a response today from Nuance/Kofax saying that they are still finalizing the date, as they ran into a delay in a system migration from Nuance to Kofax. The new estimate is around the first week of November. No word yet on upgrade cost. Regards, Joe
Thanks again, Joe.
You're welcome, Doc, I'll continue to post here if and when I learn more. Regards, Joe
Hi Doc,
I sent an email to Nuance/Kofax a few days ago asking if there's a new ETA. The reply was, "...just waiting on the announcement." I take that to mean that the software is ready, system migration is complete, and they are simply waiting for the marketing folks to announce it. Will continue to post as I learn more. Regards, Joe
Hi Doc,
A quick note to let you know that Kofax released PaperPort 14.7 recently. I'm working on an article for publication here at EE that will describe what's new in the product and provide download/install instructions. I'll post a link here to the article as soon as it is published, hopefully before the end of the week. Regards, Joe
Hi Doc,
Sorry for the delay...took longer than I had hoped. Wound up doing both an article and a five-minute EE video Micro Tutorial. Here are the links:
