GMAIL contact list

Can you point me to someone or a group that can help with a GMAIL question.  Google is very difficult to get help from.  When composing a new email in GMAIL, if you click on the "TO", which allows you to view the list of your contacts, the list is in first name order. Even though when going to Contacts separately via the 9 dot matrix, the list is in last name order.  Are there GMAIL options to show the list in last name order when clicking on the "TO" when composing a new email.

Clicking To: is HIGHLY inefficient, no matter how it's sorted. Don't click To: (click the empty space right behind it), just start typing 3 letters or so of the name, and select.
Don't  think that this is doable in Gmail

One solution that comes in mind is to export your contacts to a csv, reverse the fields name and last name (so in the name field to place the actual last name) and import again to Gmail.

This way the "name" field will be shown but actually it will be the "last"

Kiimputer, I am fully aware of clicking behind the "TO" and typing a few letters.  What if you want to simply select some names and don't remember all of them????  That is why clicking on the "TO" can be effective.

Alexios...I like your idea.  I know you can re-sort the contacts via the 9 dot matrix but I don't know how the original list of contacts were imported.  It may be that importing them in a last name sequence fixes this problem.  I may test out your idea.
Glad to help Tony
I have not had a chance to try Alexios's idea but will do so soon.  Please leave the question open so that I can respond whether it worked or not.
