For some models (1910 and 1920), goofle reports that password recovery is possible if (that's a big if) it has not been previously disabled.  Whether this will work on a 1950 is questionable, as I don't see any references to it working on a 1950.  Still, if the alternative is a complete reset ...

This is a hard way to learn that configurations should occasionally be printed or backed up externally, but experience is a dear teacher and we've all learned that way at one time or another.
Yes I agree, and this is why im trying to connect to back up the config. im new to the firm and all switches are with passwords that no one is aware of.

how would I factory reset?

i found this page

https://community.hpe.com/t5/Web-and-Unmanaged/How-to-perform-a-reset-to-factory-default-for-HPE-OfficeConnect/td-p/7066979#.XdZ3NdVCeUk

with answers same question.

the way to go is to connect via console then reboot the switch and interrupt by CTRL+B to get the boot menu.

as far as i read there is a password recovery option available.
