to install windows server 2016 core version on VMWARE 5.5 , is this supported ?

ESXi 5.5 should  support Windows 2016.

Judging by a post about installing Vmware tools on it  :
i don't any reason why this could be an issue...
After all Windows Core is a minimized version of Windows less "overhead" ...less issues.

If you've never downloaded 5.5 before, you will find it states not authorised to download.

ESXi 5.5 is out of support, so you should be looking to go to 6.0, 6.5, or 6.7.
